HTC's Vive has great VR headsets at several price points – the premium Vive Pro 2, the mid-range Vive Cosmos Elite, and the recent Vive Flow. Neither can do AR, but the company has plans to catch up with the likes of Meta's Quest Pro.
The plan includes an as-yet-unnamed headset with VR and AR capabilities that will be unveiled at CES on January 5. HTC's global head of product Shen Ye spoke to The Verge and revealed some details about the headset.
There will be front and side cameras and controller support (with six degrees of freedom) as well as hand tracking. The cameras will offer color passthrough, enabling mixed reality applications.
The headset will be standalone and will have 2 hours of battery life. When designing it, we focused on making it small, light and comfortable. Ye says the headset will be used for gaming, entertainment, exercise and even business tools.
Considering it's up from the $1,500 Quest Pro, it'll be a flagship offering. The company says its headset will be better than the Meta headset with benefits such as higher dynamic range for the cameras, allowing users to read text from a laptop or phone, for example.
It's unclear if inward-facing eye-tracking cameras will be available, but it seems to be more of a question of whether they'll be built-in or available as an option. HTC is also careful about privacy, which is a growing concern with these headsets (and may be an advantage over the Meta's offerings).
