Twitter Blue is relaunched, Musk plans to increase maximum tweet length to 4,000 characters

Early in its life, Twitter was defined by a 140-character limit (an artifact of SMS support as a method of distributing tweets). That was raised to 280 characters five years ago, and the cap will go even higher – presumably because of the price.

This is part of the Twitter Blue relaunch, which is supposed to include multiple tick colors. The familiar blue check mark appears on accounts that have passed the verification process (the specifics of which are unclear). Then there will be gold ticks for businesses and gray ticks for government officials and organizations.

The blue tick (which is important to individuals) will give users early access to new features, such as longer videos with resolutions up to 1080p. The timeline for the launch of the new features is unclear, we only know that the ability to edit tweets will be available from day 1.

The latest development is that in the near future, Twitter will increase the maximum length of a tweet to 4000 characters. Given how frequent Twitter threads are, this could be a good change (threads aren't the most readable way to present information). However, Elon Musk's brief response to a question about the change does not reveal whether or not it will be exclusive to Twitter Blue subscribers.

That would certainly be a way to convince people to buy an $8/month Blue subscription. And that means if you browse the website, Twitter for iOS will instead charge you $11 per month to offset the Apple App Store fee (30%). By the way, Twitter Blue is not an ad-free subscription, instead Blue users will only see half of the ads.

Something that could be controversial is that accounts with Twitter Blue will be prioritized for mentions and search results. In other words, if you want more people to see your content, you have to pay the piper.
